Whale of a time could cost $1 million
Monday, 25 January, 2010
The Rudd Labor Government has spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayers dollars on a special envoy to help stop whaling - but has nothing to show for it. Former Sydney Olympics boss Sandy Holloway was hand-picked by Kevin Rudd to travel the world campaigning against Japanese whaling. However, they wouldn’t let him go to the last International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting.
Over $342,000 has already been spent on travel by Mr Holloway and his team, plus more than $117,000 in fees. With a contract set to run until 30 June, taxpayers could end up forking out up to $1 million - but will they have anything to show for their money, and will Mr Rudd send Mr Holloway to the next IWC meeting instead of Minister Garrett?
